CHURCH FOR THE WRONG REASONS?

A study of the world's "living religions" can be a mind and spirit expanding experience, especially when combined with personal meditation and prayer. Gandhi believed that germs of truth were contained in all the world's religions. This turns a comparative study of them into a treasure hunt of the richest kind! Many philosophers have spent the majority of their lives searching for those threads of unity between the living religions, and their quests have enriched us all.

SECOND HAND CHURCH

Most of us, however, don't find our faith through such a reasoned approach. In the course of following our own spiritual path of least resistance, we blindly inherit the religion of our fathers, never even considering there might be another perspective. This "second hand religion" is often never truly rooted in the spirit. It becomes just a garment to be worn on religious occasions.

If you are involved with a church only because of family (and cultural) tradition, then you are leading a spiritually unexamined life. The spirit can never truly be fulfilled with words and ceremony alone.

THE CHURCH AS PROTECTOR

Many attend church to assuage their fears of being lost and condemned (fears that the church itself created). These people seek out the protection of a organization that can confidently assure their salvation and increase their sense of belonging. These people are like frightened children.

If you seek out a church to save yourself instead of transcending yourself, then you are like the person lost in the wilderness who begins to panic from the shadows in their path. Your spirit is responding from fear, not love, and your fears make you ripe for plucking... An easy target for every congregation with a shiny emblem, a convincing cause and a handy donation plate.

EASIER THAN THINKING

Still others look for their church to provide all the answers so they can put their minds to sleep and not have to think about all those disturbing spiritual questions any more. If you seek out a church to provide you with fundamental certainty, you just don't get it. You'll find plenty of places to waste your time though... The world is full of pontific leaders willing to tell you what to think, but that is their voice, not God's. It is folly to follow them.

ALL RELIGIONS: ONE BOTTOM LINE

Regardless of how many holy books you've read or sermons you've attended, the big answers have to come from within your own spirit to truly mean something. Your heart's compass must be the final judge of your progress and direction, so pay attention to its whispers! Every key you need is already inside you. No one stands between you and Creator unless you put them there.

Finding your inner spirituality does not mean having a calm life full of certainty, often quite the contrary.  It does, however, grant you an unshakable peace inside while the very power of Creator is helping you navigate the storms outside. That's an unbeatable combination.

May your life be showered with many Blessings!
